Highway 1: The scenic route
I rode from Northern California to Huntington Beach (which is the Northern most city in the Orange county) one Saturday and I found that by taking Highway 1 most of the way, and switching to the 101 whenever the 1 stopped, made for a more enjoyable ride. Most of the trip was along the coast or through LA, giving me much more to see and experience than a strictly 101 trip. I also had more options of places to stop and eat while driving through LA county. Drove right past the airport at a great spot to see airplanes take off and land. The trip ended shortly after driving through Long Beach and a quick 15 minutes on the coast, strait into Huntington Beach.
